enjoy this one. this is "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. breaking news in san francisco. an overnight home invasion and as many as five suspects on the run this morning. this is happening on 40th avenue and anza street in the city's outer richmond district. that's where "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live with the one thing the suspects left behind that could lead police right for them. interesting, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. new information. i just spoke with people inside the home who were robbed overnight and they are telling a very scary story. they didn't want to go on camera. they say they were inside at the time. these are students and they say five guys with hoods on came into the home and they had guns. they threatened them. they kicked the door down.
6:02 am
they are thinking even though there's a gate in front of this home that maybe it wasn't locked and that's how they got in in the first place. what happened is that they say they took a kitchen knife and threatened them in addition to having the gun they say they heard banging and the door gave way. this was overnight about 3:00 in the morning here in the richmond district. they say that these guys got in and kept demanding money and marijuana asking for a large 50-pound bag of marijuana. they say the men believe this was a grow house in the past and they think perhaps that is why it was targeted. they say they went through the closets and drawers and had everyone get down on the floor. they say they even got violent with them, grabbed one woman inside by the hair and kicked another guy in the chin. they say they took cash, cell phones, laptops, and again this is five guys they say involved with this. they made no effort to hide their faces at all. they had hoods on. two of them got scared they are

saying and ran out quickly. the other three were in here for quite some time taking whatever they could. everyone okay this morning. shaken up and so far no arrests. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." we're also learning more about breaking news in daly city. police now investigating a crime scene on imperial way not far from the cemetery. we have a live shot there of the scene. officers say a father and son got into a fight. the father was stabbed several times. his son struck in the head during that fight overnight. both, however, expected to survive. we have marla tellez right now. she's the first reporter on the scene. she's getting to the bottom of what exactly led up to that fight and will have a live report coming your way in ten minutes. a silicon valley tech giant is sending a powerful leader to north korea. google's executive chairman eric schmidt will travel as early as this month.
6:04 am
scott mcgrew will discuss the impact of this landmark visit but we begin with bob redell live at google headquarters in mountain view with more this morning. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. officially from google headquarters here in mountain view there's been no comment yet. that could be in part because this is considered a trip that is considered to be private. the ap is reporting that google executive chairman eric schmidt will be later this month possibly as soon as the end of this month will be traveling to north korea on a private trip that would be humanitarian in nature and led by former new mexico governor bill richardson. this would be significant for a number of reasons. as you're well aware, north korea is very secluded. cut off from the rest of the world known as the hermit's kingdom. the country doesn't even allow citizens access to the world wide web and only some citizens are able to get on a local internet that's controlled by the government. it is also no secret that google
6:05 am
wants to bring the internet to everyone. whether or not schmidt will push for that on this trip is not clear. allowing google's chairman to visit could be at the very least symbolic. the timing of this trip is also interesting. just a couple of days ago in a new year's day speech, north korean leader kim jong-un said his country is in the middle of a modern day revolution and emphasized bringing his country into the 21st century whether it comes to digital technology and computers. will the leader of that country be meeting with the leader of this silicon valley giant? that is still unknown. let's turn this over to business and tech reporter scott mcgrew. from your point of view, what do you think the point of this trip is? >> nobody is really quite sure, are they, bob? there are some historical analogies here. we talked about kim jong-un being like gorbachev opening the country a bit. nixon going to china on a

smaller scale. is google going there for business to crack the north korean market considering how few computers are in north korea, it doesn't need to. google hasn't come up with within agreement with china and that's a huge market. perhaps google coming to the peoples republic even in the form of one guy that's still considered fairly exciting. we're talking again earlier about gorbachev. we weren't quite sure what he was up to early on. this dates us a little bit. he made early steps in the early '90s with the most minor of things. we got to see his wife for goodness sakes and kremlin watchers thought that was fascinating and kim jong-un has been showing off his wife and maybe a maybe as we see cracks in north korea. >> in the secrecy. thank you very much. this morning we are also watching the weather as we give you a live look outside. this over the south bay in san jose. it is not a spare the air day as it has been the last couple but the state is asking you to avoid

6:13 am
investigators have completely cleared the scene. this is the crown colony condominiums right off 280 right as you exit hickey boulevard. i just interviewed a sergeant with daly city police and he tells me it was actually the father who used his own cell phone to call 911 about 2:30 this morning. that's what prompted all of the police officers and fire department and ambulances to come to this condominium complex. that's when the father about 2:30 this morning and the son got into a fight and that's when the son stabbed his father. >> the officers responded to the scene and they saw that the dad had multiple stab wounds and the son had trauma to his head. we're not sure where he was stabbed yet. we think it's a knife. i can't confirm that at this point. he was definitely stabbed with some type of sharp object. >> reporter: now both have been transported to san francisco general hospital where police say they are recovering with nonlife threatening injuries.
6:14 am
we do have video of at least one of them being transported on a gurney this morning. we also have video of a white car that was parked underneath in the garage here with blood stains inside that car. police are not saying how that ties into the stabbing exactly but it is related to this crime scene. police at this point are trying to figure out what prompted the fight between the father and son. we can tell you the father is said to be in his mid 30s. the son late teens or early 20s. live in daly city, marla tellez, "today in the bay." it's 6:14 right now. a quick check of the day's top stories. the other ones we have for you. students who survived a school shooting at sandy hook elementary school returning to classes today at a school in nearby monroe, connecticut. this will be the very first time the kids have returned to class since the tragic december 14th attack leaving 20 students and six staff members dead. we'll have a live report coming up for you in a half hour.

teens or early 20s. they obviously got into a fight but over what is the big question. the two, however, are recovering and are expected to be okay at san francisco general. >> the officers were processing the crime scene as far as any potential evidence that was in the apartment and we have detectives at the hospital right now waiting to speak with both parties to find out what happened. >> reporter: also related to this is a white car that we actually shot video of early this morning. it has blood stains on the driver's seat. that car parked in the garage below the third floor apartment where this all went down. we talked to the security guard who was on duty at the height of the investigation. he's just baffled to hear what happened. >> the biggest thing that happens around here is a bit of vandalism in the garages. that's the biggest thing i've ever heard of. >> reporter: we spoke to other people that live here at crown

district. a group of san francisco state students were sleeping. they think that these guys got past the front door or front gate that was unlocked. they made no effort to highs faces and marched from the bedroom to living room where they ransacked the place for cash and cell phones. one of the victims said he thinks the gunman believed this used to be a marijuana grow house and that's why it may have been targeted. these guys got violent and kicked one in the chin, grabbed some of the women's hair who were inside. the man that we spoke with said this whole ordeal lasted about 15 to 20 minutes and then the guys ran away. the students very scared this morning. of course they say they've never had a gun pointed in their face. all of these are students at san francisco state. they say that once their lease is up, they do plan to move. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "toy in the bay." >> christie, thank you very much. >> check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren.

sun starting to come up over the bay area. >> coldest point of the day. sunrise. it's cold out there. you think about it though, it's the furthest point from which our energy source, the sun, was last out. that's why it gets so cold around sunrise. temperatures will start to warm up just after 7:35 and temperatures are going to be mild as we finish off the day. as we head throughout the first part, you need the jacket. 38 degrees in san francisco for an hour or two. 36 degrees in sonoma. take you down so the south bay where we have just as cold temperatures in places like gilroy at 29. 29 degrees in concord this morning. 30 in livermore. talk about air quality. this has improved overnight. more wind helped to mix out particulate matter. good in moderate range everywhere across the bay area. don't have to worry about spare the air for today. it's not illegal to burn firewood we urge you don't do too much unless you have to to
6:49 am
get air quality in good shape for everybody. through 6:00 p.m. tonight, things will get tricky. a cutoff low. it's hard to dictate where a cutoff low will end up. it's not attached to the jet stream. so what we're expecting is this will meander offshore ushering in more clouds and drizzle. we see showers increasing toward the coastline. what we are expecting is somewhere between overnight saturday into sunday, maybe a few light showers. very light. nothing heavy. maybe measuring a tenth of an inch of precipitation. like i said, it's hard to pinpoint exactly where that thing is going to end up and how much rain it is going to bring. keep that in the back of your mind. a chance of showers as we head through late saturday night into sunday. 58 degrees for today. lots of sunshine in livermore. 59 in fremont. 60 in san jose. and the same for you in oakland. temperatures will warm up into the mid 60s by saturday. we're looking good there.

increasing clouds. maybe a stray shower on sunday. and next week overall looking rather dry. no significant rain in the forecast until the midsection of the month. let's check your drive with mike. >> we're looking at more cars on the roadways. we saw an early burst of traffic but now things are sorting themselves out north 101 north of 680 up to the airport. 87 coming into çdowntown. the burst at 280 and 17 seems to have sorted itself out. that's a key for the build. we'll track that for the south bay. highway 9 at sanborn an early morning crash resulting in a car hitting a pole. pg&e thinks it's one of their holes. traffic control for this local commute. watch for that. other local roads very cold out there at or below freezing temperatures. be careful. possibility very high of some black ice in many spots. 680 not a problem. 580 slowing through livermore. easing a bit over the last 20 minutes. that might be the burst you see for that area. 880 slowing through hayward and

also through fremont. san mateo bridge with west commute moving slowly. a few cars. bay bridge also has a backup but it's easing over the last few minutes back to the 880 over crossing. westbound is your commute. eastbound at central reports of a big pothole. we'll let you know if caltrans has to close any lanes. back to you. >> thanks, mike. weeks removed from a tragic and heart wrenching scene, an emotional day in newtown, connecticut. >> first time since that deadly shooting spree at sandy hook elementary, students and teachers who survived the attack will return to class. jay gray is live in monroe, connecticut, now with a closer look at where the kids are going back to school and what the first day will be like. good morning, jay. >> reporter: good morning, laura and jon. they are going back here in monroe. the next town over about seven miles from sandy hook elementary. they are going back to a school that was empty before this tragedy. a middle school here that the

district offered and sandy hook took advantage of. they've been working over the last three weeks to refurbish that facility. a lot of work included bringing equipment and the furniture from sandy hook elementary to this new school and recreating the classrooms inside to look almost exactly like they did at sandy hook elementary. that's down to the book bags and desks and all of the jackets that were left as students ran out putting them right back in place and having the kids sit next to one another to feel some type of familiarity as they walk into this facility. it won't be about lesson plans or academics today when they come back. it will probably be next week before they really hit the math and science and those things hard and have homework. more arts and crafts today. it's about getting back into a routine and getting into some kind of school structure and being with those classmates, and being together in the classroom. it's going to be tough for the parents as well. in fact, many have told us i'm
6:53 am
going to have a hard time letting my kid go back to school. i remember what happened the last time i did. it's tough to let go. those students will be allowed to come to school today -- parents will be allowed to come to school with kids and stay as long as they need to. they'll go through the first half of the day doing arts and crafts and things like that and last half will be more of an open house where they will talk about what's happening and what's working and what's not working and what they need to focus on. as one administrator said, there's no playbook for all of this thankfully. we've never had to go through this before. so we're learning as we go. and we're just trying to keep a focus on what we can do to help these families help these kids as they come back. >> it sounds like they just have to continue to try to work through it as a community like they've done all along. all right. we wish them all the best. thank you very much, jay. >> that's a tough one there. 6:53 right now. a silicon valley tech giant

sending a powerful exec to north korea. google's executive chairman eric schmidt traveling to north korea as early as this month. scott mcgrew will discuss the impact of this landmark visit. let's start things off with bob redell live at google headquarters right now in mountain view with a look at what's happening. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. no comment yet from google headquarters here at mountain view. the associated press is reporting that google executive chairman eric schmidt will be traveling to north korea as soon as possibly as early as this month. this will be a private trip. it will be humanitarian in nature and led by former new mexico governor bill richardson. this would be significant for a number of reasons. it's no secret that google wants to bring the internet to everyone and people at north korea don't have it because the government frankly won't allow it. only some citizens are allowed access to a local internet that is government controlled but not
6:55 am
the worldwide web. whether or not schmidt would offer to change that for what's considered to be the last frontier in cyberspace is not clear. allowing google's chairman to visit could be at the very least symbolic. the timing of this trip would be interesting. just a couple days ago in a new year's day speech, north korean leader jim jong-un emphasized importance of bringing his country into the 21st century with digital technology and computers. will the leader of the country meet with the tech giant? that's unknown. i want to bring in scott mcgrew into this conversation. get your thoughts on what you think the point of this trip could be. >> bob, i think you were right on. you talked about symbolism. it's not going to be as b s bub trip because computers must measure in the few thousands so there's no profit to be found in north korea. some analysts say maybe north
6:56 am
korea is interested in google services but even that's probably overthinking it. we just simply don't know why schmidt is going. nobody has said out loud or even whose idea the whole trip is. as you point out, you do have this young leader in the peoples republic telegraphing wi ining willingness to open up the country. schmidt is going to north korea as a private individual and not as a representative of google so much that schmidt can be seen separate from google. google stocks this morning up ever so slightly. dow industrials down 42 points after a terrific day yesterday. back to you. >> what a way to start the new year. >> good rally. jump-start for us. thank you very much. 6:56. let's see what's jumping if our weather. christina loren, one final look. >> you may have so jump to stay warm out there and get that heart going this morning. it's frigid yet again. this is the last morning where we expect the 20s at this hour. we should be more in the 40s and

upper 30s tomorrow morning. 27 degrees is very cold in fairfield and napa. same for santa rosa. 29 in gilroy. right here in beautiful san jose 34 degrees. 38 in the city. some north bay cities are expected to drop to 26 degrees. as we progress through the next half hour. you round out the day at 61. lots of sunshine. tomorrow morning we wake up and that fog returns. mild conditions as a result to start. we do have a chance for rain in the forecast. if you missed the seven day, we'll have it every 15 minutes throughout the "today" show. good morning, mike. >> good morning. your day planner showed potential for ice at many spots at or below freezing temperatures. keep that in mind for local roads. bay bridge starting to thaw a bit. backup moving better. it hit hard and now look at that, only backed up to the end of the parking lot. you still have company coming down the east shore freeway and east out of berkeley toward richmond at central avenue reports of a big pothole.
6:58 am
we're tracking it. caltrans has yet to tell us if they will close lanes. i'll track that. fremont in the east bay shows you the build here. south from dakota past the truck scales heading down to the south bay. expect slowing over the next half hour to an hour. back to you. >> thank you so much. time for a final check on some of the day's other top stories. students that survived the school shooting at sandy hook elementary returning to class today at nearby monroe, connecticut. the first time the kids have returned to class since the december 14th tragedy and attack that left 20 students, six staff members dead. the live report was very emotional. google's executive chairman eric schmidt will visit north korea on a humanitarian trip alongside former new mexico governor bill richardson. the trip will reportedly happen this month. nhl and players association still have not come up with a deal to get hockey back on the ice. a federal mediator joined those

negotiations that stretched into early morning hours today. neither side right now saying if any progress has been made. it's official. machines have taken over the world or at least in america. there are now more internet connected gadgets than people in the u.s. consumer market research group npd estimates 425 million devices versus 311 million americans. the gap really continues to grow. we're talking smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles to name a few. if you get up early with us on a regular basis, this might affect you. starbucks going greener. the coffee chain offering a reusable cup. the idea here is for you to bring that cup back for refills in return they'll give you ten cents off your drink. starbucks says baristas will clean those cups before refilling them. >> interesting concept. >> we'll see if it works. thanks for joining us this morning. we're back with
